USA Women Playing For Positions 9-12, USA Men Looking at 37-44

Thursday February 28, 2008
The USA Women's Team finished Stage 1 of the 2008 World Team Table Tennis Championships in fine style, with a 3-2 win over Korea DPR to cement 2nd position in their group, behind ping-pong powerhouse China. The USA team swapped Wang Chen into the #3 position and move Li Nan into the #2 slot, gambling that Wang would win her match against the Korea DPR #3, and hoping that Gao Jun could pick up her two matches. And that was how the fixture proceeded, with Gao defeating Kim Mi Yong 3-1, and Kim Jong 3-0 in the deciding match at 2-all, while Wang Chen defeated Hyon Ryon Hui 3-1.

Unfortunately the USA women could not maintain their momentum in Stage 2, losing 2-3 to the Austrian women's team. The USA team will now play off for positions 9-12, starting against Germany.

The USA Men's Team finished with 2 wins and 5th place in its First Stage group on countback, after tying with Vietnam and Turkey. They are currently in the running for positions 37-44, after winning their initial Second Stage match against Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0. Mark Hazinski, David Zhuang, and Han Xiao all recorded a win.

Second Stage results can be found at the ITTF website.
