As a table tennis nut, I spend a lot of time surfing the net, visiting a number of table tennis websites and forums along the way. From time to time, I spot an article or post that I think is worth sharing with my fellow enthusiasts (that would be you!). Here's some of the articles that got me thinking this week:
- Pingskills book review of "Outliers"
Further confirmation of the "10 000 hours to expertise" rule. I first heard of this theory when Sean O'Neill mentioned it on the forum years ago, and it looks like it is still valid.
- 10 Tips from the book J-O Waldner, by Jens Felke.
Looked a bit disappointing on the first read through (I was hoping for the secret that would make me the next Jan-Ove), but on second thought there is a whole lot of valuable insight packed into a few brief paragraphs.
- Technical innovations in Chinese table tennis.
An older article, but an interesting look at China's point of view regarding table tennis since 1989, including the rise of speed glue, the introduction of the 40mm ball, the rising importance of the backhand, and an intriguing mention of a study which found that the player who reaches 5 points first in a game, wins the game 85% of the time. I wonder if that statistic still holds true in 2010?
- Biba Golic and Other Reasons Why You Should Be Playing Ping-Pong
Kind of a trashy article really, more like tabloid table tennis. But hey, any publicity is good publicity, especially as far as the sport is concerned in the USA. Probably worth the read just for the final quote by USA table tennis "pioneer of cool" Wally Green.
