When Should Beginners Use Junk Rubbers?

Tuesday February 12, 2008
I get asked fairly frequently by new ping-pong players about which long pips rubber or antispin rubber they should use. My answer?

Neither.

Why is that? Why shouldn't new players use junk rubbers if they feel like it? And who am I to say they shouldn't do it? Well, I do have good reasons for advocating sticking with normal rubbers instead of trying the funny stuff. You can read about my reasons Why Beginning Table Tennis Players Should Not Use Junk Rubbers here.

I agree whith you in a normal situation, but every rule has it exception.
Once came to me a child (7 years old) to be teached to play. He has a protesis in one leg. After 8 training sessions I suggested him to put a long pimples rubber at his BH side. He became a top player (for his age) in my country, Venezuela.

Yes, it’s true that there will always be the occasional person that’s different. For 99% of new players though, I think staying with normal rubbers for the first year or two while they develop their game is the best advice.
