Start of Forward Swing

The ball has moved into the reach of the player, who is swinging forward at the ball, and is about to make contact.

Points to look for:

  • There is a small amount of pushing up with the legs, but much less when compared to driving against a backspin ball.
  • The snapping of the playing forearm is just beginning, as the blurring of the photograph shows. The blur trail also clearly shows that the path of the racket is both forwards and upwards in a relatively straight line (as viewed from the side) as the player swings forward to make contact.
  • The upper playing arm is not being swung from the shoulder, but is being moved as the waist and shoulders turns back to the right. So it can be seen that the forward swing is not a swinging of the arm from the shoulder joint, but a turning of the body which also moves the upper playing arm, and a snapping of the forearm around the elbow joint.
