End of Forward Swing

The forward swing has come to an end, and the ball is on its way.

Points to look for:

  • The player is now turning his head to start watching his opponent at the other end of the court, rather than the flight of the ball.
  • The hips, waist and shoulders have almost completed turning back to the left.
  • The hips, waist and shoulders are a little higher than the original ready position.
  • Notice that the player has finished in a balanced position, with his body and arm almost back in the position it started from, apart from the forearm being up towards the head. If the arm was used to generate most of the power instead of the waist and torso, the arm would tend to finish across the body to the right of the picture (the player's left), and the player would be off-balance, and have to spend time regaining his balance and bringing his arm back over to his right. Instead, all the player has to do here is drop his arms and he is back in his ready position for the next stroke.
  • The racket has moved a little more forward and further upwards. The tip of the racket is now pointing upwards, in what is called ‘the salute’.
