The backswing has finished, and the ball has almost reached the player. Notice how the player is now stationary and well balanced.

Points to look for:

  • The player has moved a little more weight onto his left leg, since the ball has moved in flight a little to his left, and he does not want to move his feet at this stage - he would rather have a stable base with a little lean to his left, than be moving while hitting the ball.
  • The free arm remained in position.
  • The player's body has remained fairly square to the approaching ball, and the player is playing the ball from in front of his body.
  • The player has continued to watch the ball closely.
  • Both knees have bent, to allow the player to get lower relative to the ball, since the direction of the forward stroke will be forwards and upwards.
