The player has made contact with the ball, which is now on its way back to the other side of the table.

Points to look for:

  • The player has lifted the bat a little at the moment of contact, in an attempt to soften the contact, and help control the ball a little more.
  • The blur of the ball trail shows the ball is moving horizontally forward, rather than upward or downward, so the player has judged the bat angle fairly well.
  • The free arm has been used to help maintain balance as the stroke has been played.
  • The player has put a little weight forward onto his left leg, as shown by the lifting of the right heel. This is due to the very small forward swing used, and helps the player maintain his balance.
