Question: How Often Should You Replace Your Table Tennis Rubbers?

OK thanks to your articles, I have learned a lot and am starting to go in the right direction but I have 1 or 2 questions that I need answered.

  1. How many rubbers are in one packet and how often do you replace the rubber?

  2. How can I get into playing competitively in the US? Should I join a club or something?
Thank you very much,
W.K.

Answer: Hi W.K. - here's my answers to your questions.

How Often Should You Replace Your Table Tennis Rubbers?

You will get only one rubber per packet - at least, I've never been lucky enough to get more!

How often you should replace the rubber really depends on the type of rubber you are using.

  • For normal rubbers the easiest way to tell when it's time to change it is to push a ball along the surface of the rubber - if the middle of the rubber has noticeably less grip than the edges, it's time to change.
  • For pimples out rubbers (short, medium or long pimples), usually if some of the pimples are missing or starting to crack, it's time to change the rubber.
  • For antispin rubbers, you can just about use them forever!
Some players will also change the rubber when the sponge in the middle of the rubber is worn out and has lost its spring. You can tell if the sponge needs replacing by putting the bat on the table and bouncing the ball on the middle of the racket and the sides of the racket, and comparing the height of the bounce. If the ball bounces less in the middle, the sponge is likely to be worn out.

How to Start Playing Ping-Pong Competitively in the USA

To start playing competitively in the USA, I would recommend getting into a ping-pong club, and then playing in local tournaments first - your fellow club members will be able to point you in the direction of where the local tournaments are. Plus it's just more fun playing at a club, and going to tournaments with your clubmates!

You can find a list of USA clubs here. As you improve, you can travel interstate for more tournaments. Here's where to find tournaments in the USA by region.
