Should I Use the Same Brand For My Table Tennis Rubbers and Blade?

By Greg Letts, About.com

Question: Should I Use the Same Brand For My Table Tennis Rubbers and Blade?

Is it best to use the same brand (e.g. Butterfly, Stiga, Joola, Double Happiness etc) for both your table tennis blade and your ping-pong rubbers? Are they specifically designed to work togther, or can you mix and match blades and rubbers from different table tennis manufacturers?

Answer: In general, despite the manufacturer's claims that their equipment is the best, and that their rubbers are designed to work with their blades, there's really no benefit of using the same brand of blade as rubber.

With the staggering number of rubbers and blades out there, you may find it easier to use the same brand for both, since it makes choosing equipment a bit simpler. But each rubber will feel a bit different on different blades, so there is no way to know for sure which particular combination will suit you best. And sticking to the one brand may mean that you are missing out on using the best rubber or blade for you.

So overall, I'd recommend using whatever brands you like - over time you'll develop a preference for certain brands, if you are like most players. Personally, I use a Butterfly blade, with Dr Neubauer rubber on the forehand, and Stiga rubber on the backhand, and I like this combination very much.

Vive la difference!
