junk rubber

By Greg Letts, About.com

Definition: In table tennis, junk rubber is an informal phrase used by many players to describe rubber that they find awkward to play against, such as antispin, medium pimples or long pimples. A lesser number of players will also include short pimples in this collection.

The term began as a derogatory description of rubbers that didn't behave like normal rubber. Some players still use the term in this manner, but many others simply use the term as a convenient way of explaining that an opponent is not using normal rubber on both sides of his bat (e.g. "My last opponent was using junk rubber on his backhand.").

Also Known As: funny rubber
Examples: Watch out for Max, he uses junk rubber.
