pretensioned rubber

By Greg Letts, About.com

Definition: Pretensioned rubber is a recent innovation by manufacturers, who are attempting to duplicate the effect of speed glue without its use.

The topsheet of the rubber is put under extra tension when the rubber is manufactured, often causing a dome effect. When the rubber is then glued to the blade, this extra tension is supposed to cause the rubber to act as if it has been speed glued.

Most players believe that these rubbers are only partly successful, and still do not fully duplicate the effects of speed glue.

Also Known As: tensor rubber
Alternate Spellings: pre-tensioned rubber
