The ball is approaching the player, and the player is in the middle of his backswing.

Points to look for:

  • The player has made a small shuffle step to his left, in order to get in an optimum position for playing his stroke.
  • The racket is being moved downwards from the elbow is a simple straight line motion, without any curves in the movement of the bat.
  • The player has not yet begun to cock his wrist.
  • The free arm is relatively stationary, and will remain so throughout the stroke, as it is used to balance the player.
