Zhang Yining of China is the defending Olympic champion in the Women's Singles, and was also the gold medalist in Women's Doubles with partner Wang Nan (although this event will no longer be contested at the Olympic Games).
A right handed shakehander who topspins and drives from both wings, Zhang has been a dominant force in world ranks for many years. Zhang is pictured here performing her trademark forehand loop.
