In Deuce/Ad Situations, Does the Person Who is Behind Always Have the Serve?

By , About.com Guide

Question: In Deuce/Ad Situations, Does the Person Who is Behind Always Have the Serve?

Do we change serves every two points, not every five? When it's a deuce/ad situation at 11-10, does the person behind always have the serve?

Thanks,
Larry

Answer: Hi Larry,
The rules changed in 2000, so that serves change every 2 points now, not 5. At 10-all the players only get to serve one serve each, taking turns. The person who served at 0-0 will serve at 10-all, then the receiver serves the next point, and so forth. It doesn't matter who is ahead in the score.

This procedure is set out in the Laws of Table Tennis, under Law 2.13.3:
2.13.3 After each 2 points have been scored the receiving player or pair shall become the serving player or pair and so on until the end of the game, unless both players or pairs score 10 points or the expedite system is in operation, when the sequences of serving and receiving shall be the same but each player shall serve for only 1 point in turn.
