Can You Only Win a Point in Ping-Pong When You Are Serving?

By , About.com Guide

Question: Can You Only Win a Point in Ping-Pong When You Are Serving?

I need to know when the game ends. I was taught once you reach 10 points, it’s automatically the person who is losing's serve. They continue to serve until they reach 10. At that point you rotate the serve every time someone gets the advantage. I was also taught that you can not lose on the serve. Therefore, you can be as risky as you want. Can you please clarify the rules to me.

Bill

Answer: Hi Bill,

At the beginning of each game, the server gets two serves, than the opponent gets to have two serves, and so on. This doesn't change when one player reaches 10 points. The normal serving routine of two serves each continues until the game is won, or until both players reach 10 points.

Law 2.13.3 After each 2 points have been scored the receiving layer or pair shall become the serving player or pair and so on until the end of the game, unless both players or pairs score 10 points or the expedite system is in operation, when the sequences of serving and receiving shall be the same but each player shall serve for only 1 point in turn.

Scoring at 10-all (Deuce)

When the score reaches 10-all, the player who served first in that game will serve one serve, and then the other player will serve one serve. The serve continues to alternate, no matter who wins the point, until the game is over (one player gets a lead of two points). You can find a full explanation on the rules for deuce serving here.

Can You Lose the Point on Your Service?

You can definitely lose the point on the serve, so every point counts! Whoever wins a rally, gets the point, whether they are the server or receiver. The relevant Laws of Table Tennis regarding how to win a point can be found here. You'll notice that there is no mention that only the server can win a point. So whether you are server or receive doesn't matter, if you win the rally, you get another point added to your score.

Hope this makes things clearer,
Greg
