Definition: In table tennis, VOCs (volatile organic compounds/components) are chemical compounds found in the glue that is used to attach table tennis rubbers to the blade. It is the presence of these compounds that gives speed glue its effect - extra speed and spin.
As of the 25th May 2007, the ITTF banned the use of glue that has VOCs present in it. The ITTF will start testing for the presence of banned VOCs in senior competition as of 1st September 2008. The start date for testing in junior competition is 1st January 2008.
