The player has stepped forward with his right foot, and is now in position to play the push.

Points to look for:

  • The player is continuing to watch the ball right up to the point of contact, in order to make sure he can adjust to any changes in the ball's movement.
  • The player has reached towards the ball, with his elbow only a little higher than his hand. Compare the elbow position in this photograph with the much higher elbow position in the comparable forehand flick photograph.
  • The free arm has actually moved very little, but because the player's body has moved to his right, it is now extended from his body and acting as a counterweight to his playing arm, improving his balance.
  • The player's right foot has gone under the table to allow the player to reach the ball comfortably, and still be able to push himself backwards after making the stroke.
