Ma Lin of China is attending his second Olympic Games in 2008. In 2004 Ma was the Men's Doubles winner with partner Chen Qi, and made the Round of 16 in the Men's Singles.
Ma is noted for his serving technique (in particular his forehand pendulum serve) and third ball attacks. Although he mainly prefers to play using a traditional Chinese penhold style, he also plays a reverse penhold backhand (RPB) from time to time.
A 3-time runner up in the World Championships (1999, 2005, and 2007), Ma would find an Olympic Gold Medal a welcome addition to his mantelpiece.
Ma is pictured here performing a chinese penhold backhand block. Note how Ma has straightened up in order to make getting on top of the ball easier.
