What Table Tennis Rules Would You Change?

I once heard someone propose years ago that we should balance the ball on the back of our hand on the service toss. It's difficult to serve right out of the hand with no toss, you can't impart spin, and cupping or curling fingers has no benefit.

I saw a guy in my club use ping pong balls with the soccer ball design to train against long pips. I think from a spectator's standpoint, it would be good to have a pattern on the ball so they can see the spin. I believe the weakness in TT is that audiences not familiar with the sport can't understand why we're taking that big swing to loop or why one might miss smashing a lob. If they can really see the spin, I think it will take the sport to a better understanding for audiences.

I can see the QOD in the future: What design do you want on the TT ball? :-) Soccer, smiley face, stars (all over the ball and not just three), stripes etc.?

The only complaint I heard was people's loops would be read easier. Also, some like acting like they're putting tons of spin on the serve but it's really dead, they don't like the ball because of this.

I'd like to make all edge balls a let. That way, no player has to apologize insincerely or be the unlucky recipient of an edge. A downside, however, would be the inevitable arguments whether the ball hit the edge or the table.

I thought about this once, and came up with an idea that we could make the tables about 1/4 inch bigger, but keep the white tape where it is. This way, if you see a bad bounce then you know it must be out.

Quite a concept marco.

I'd second the alternating direction on doubles serves: would give some more variation to the game (and of course, my best serves are from the other side ;p)

I'm a huge fan of the banning of speedglue, though I'm sure almost all combo / SP / anti / LP players are.

I also wouldn't mind raising the table an inch or two, though my sub- 5' fiancee might not be too pleased...

I would LOVE for them to change the crosscourt serving rule in doubles, meaning you could serve from anywhere to anywhere.

I say make the toss a good 2 feet or so. The reason is with the 6" toss many rascals at the club level do not toss the ball at all. instead some rascals just let the ball drop downwards and say it is 6" toss.

Without the toss it is very difficult to read spin and direction. Make it a mandatory 48" and insist that the ball should be propelled upwards. The minimum 2-4 feet up in the air or above shoulder height should work fine, again emphasizing that the ball has also to fall a certain minimum distance before the player can strike the same.

Nobody should get an unfair advantage by not legally tossing the ball.
